Whether it’s home furnishings or fashion, interior designer Siobhan Murphy is known for her daring maximalist approach, but even she found herself speechless when presented with an incredible jacket from dream in technicolor embroidered especially for her by Yorkshire artist David Morrish.

The jacket features Siobhan’s “Donuts are a girl’s best friend” graphic, reinterpreted in embroidery and appliqué by David, who is a fashion design professor and lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, as well as a working designer, several award-winning with his company Kingfly. Embroidery.

“I have to say it’s very rare, I’m almost speechless but seeing it in the flesh was overwhelming. The design, the hours and hours of work and the total passion that lies in something like this. It is a work of art that I will cherish forever. David is an absolute master of his craft and a disruptor of digital embroidery.

David, who lives near Huddersfield, just won the Wilcom Digital Embroiderer of the Year 2021 award, an award he also won in 2019.

He says: “After winning the title two years ago, I have had the privilege of working with other artists and designers in a wide range of disciplines and subjects, to see what is possible. with digital embroidery and showing the world that it is an art form in its own right and can be used for more than logos and badges.

David has created pieces for fashion designers Matty Bovan, Richard Quinn and Sadie Williams, interior designers Linda Barker and Siobhan Murphy, illustrators David Downton, Richard Kilroy, Laura Laine and Will Broome, and has collaborated with graffiti artists , street artists and tattoo artists from all over the world.

“I explored digital embroidery by working with pre-fabricated garments for personalization and personalization opportunities, essentially giving a tired garment a new, exciting and daring second life. These include creating pieces for makeup artist Brooke Ellis, a fire bird for Natalie Imbruglia featured on her single On my Way, and a fun, ’90s music-inspired creation for award-winning singer, Dannii Minogue.

David took Siobhan’s “Donuts are a girl’s best friend” graphic and embroidered it all over the ready-made jacket. “This was my first time trying this, as previous work was always placed in the center of the panel,” he says. “This jacket involved a complete overhaul of the design and manufacturing approach, pushing me and my machine to its limits. The jacket had to be partly deconstructed in order to be highlighted, before being finally reassembled. In total, it includes over 1.5 million points and over 150 hours of design, CAD and manufacturing. It is a truly unique piece that reflects the bold, bright and colorful personality of Siobhan.
