Imagine a design inspired by abstract psychedelic illustrations from the 60s and 70s displaying the beauty of New Zealand with its blue lakes and snow-capped peaks, combined with a tropical garden like the Garden of Eden. These are just a few of the brilliant inspirations behind the record 145 craft breweries that each nominated one entry for this year’s prestigious GABS Craft Brewery Can Design Awards.

After beer lovers and art lovers voted for their three favorite creations to establish the TOP 10 finalists, it was the turn of a panel of brand expert judges, including Adrian Mills Deloitte Australia, Emma Robbins M&C Saatchi, Ben Keenan The Thought Police, Andrew Morwood Orora Group, Francesca Lucas BoozeBud and Paul Haggett Opal Specialty Packaging who had an incredibly difficult job evaluating the finalists in six different categories (visual and aesthetic appeal, creativity and originality, impact, brand identity, usability and design message and brief).

In the tightest finishes possible with very little to separate the top 10, the 2021 GABS Can Design Awards winner taking home the top prize and the prestigious Orora The Gold Trophy is Victoria’s Stomping Ground Brewing Company ‘NECTARON OF THE GODS’ designed by Terry Ricardo.

Queensland won silver and bronze with Blackflag’s Kick Ons (Ross Holloway) and Aether’s El Jefe (Steve Falco, procreative). Topping the charts in South Australia was the 2020 winner Little Bang with their Zero Kelvin Cold IPA (Matt O’Connor). Honors in ACT went to Capital Growler of Capital Brewing Co (Mick Healy) and Tawny Grogmouth of NSW Bucketty’s Brewing Co (Brent Turner). Gage Road Brew Co’s Dawn Patrol Breakfast Stout (Dwight O’Neil) took the # 1 spot in WA and Tasmanian State honors went to Moo Brew’s Hazy Pale (David Cambell, Mona)

The Nectaron of the Gods design was inspired by abstract and psychedelic illustrations from the 60s and 70s. Playing on the expression “nectar of the gods”, the idea was to communicate a divine nectar, out of the ordinary, made from ‘a variety of New Zealand hops, mainly Nectaron. In setting the scene, we turned to the beauty of New Zealand with its blue lakes and snow-capped peaks, combined with an otherworldly tropical landscape like the Garden of Eden. Upon closer inspection, you will learn about New Zealand’s iconic flora and the main tasting characteristics of this magical beer.

Blackflag Brewery (QLD)

The intention was to capture the essence of the lanes of Sunshine Coast and the killer skate scene in the community led by our good friend Chiggy and her team. We worked with a direction that captured the ‘skate away’ style to create a hand drawn design by adding elements that refer to ‘Kick Ons’ in several ways, on the one hand while skating and on the other hand by. finishing the night in good shape. From the swollen pavement and graffiti, to the tape / concrete feel as well as the typical palm trees of the sunny coast, the image represents the colors of the early morning sunrise to definitely take up the cans named Kick Ons. This design is an expression of the Mexican beer style, interwoven with subtle hints of our overall Gothic brand theme using ghoulish skeletons and skulls.

Little Bang Brewing Co (HER)

The Cold IPA style is crisp, crisp, and immaculate. Kelvin too. Despite its sub-zero environment and steel case, it is full of depth and character. In a chaotic world of crazy and loud branding, Zero Kelvin stands out by speaking softly and deeply. Robots are also super cool.


Murder Hornet Imperial IPA

Brewing black hops (QLD)

Murder Hornet was to be the flagship beer of the series and Dan and the team wanted a label to match and set the tone for the rest of the series. With words like murder, kill, swarm, sting, intense, predator, and prey all floating around in the description of beer, I felt like I needed something pretty haunting. Skulls. I dig them. Always have. Hornet + Skull. What does it look like? I didn’t know, but after grabbing a few images and trying a few things in photoshop, I hit a particular blend layer and boom he was looking me in the face. Murder Hornet. I put it on the box. Full black. Drop the logo. Drop the name. ABV and Volume only. But something more was needed. The orange had to appear somewhere. I tried to get him into the hornet’s tail but it looked a little weird, and then I thought, what looks a little scary? Claw marks. yeah they scare me. So I put 4 orange stripes on the skull to symbolize the markings on the hornet’s tail and to refer to the 4th anniversary. I sent the design back to Dan with the simple words, “It had to be scarier.


Sidewinder Hazy Pale

Brick Lane Brewery (CIV)

Sidewinder was designed to capture the freedom and ease of the 70s, a time when life could be led more spontaneously and carefree. At just 0.3 standard drinks, Sidewinder Hazy Pale was created with the intention that neither flavor nor drinking experience should be compromised in the quest to include low alcohol options into your day. The can design captures that intention to enjoy the moment with a proud beer to hold, without the overt no / low alcohol references. With a playful and charismatic can in hand, featuring Sandman-inspired stripes, drinkers can live the Sidewinder life without compromise.

Pirate Life Brewery (AS)

This label is a mix of themes and images that I personally love to draw. It’s a Frankenstein mix of original tattoo designs past and present, and ideas merged into one cohesive image to wrap the box. I wanted it to be dark and gnarly, and a bit twisted, which could be compared to something of a similar creation by the team at Pirate Life. It’s true to my style, just like the liquid in the can.


Last tram in Brunswick

Temple Brewing Company (CIV)

The design is based on the 2020 ‘Last Train to Boston’ and hand painted in a watercolor style to represent Brunswick East, a suburb full of street art. It is directly associated with the title and includes several hidden “Easter eggs”. The tram n. 01 is the tram that leads to Brunswick East and stops at number 121, the stop to reach the brewery. The title is based on the style of PTV. There is a “Last Train to Boston” advertisement on the side of the tram to revert to the previous version. There are also hidden jumps in the background.

Horizon Noir IPA Event

Cavalier Brewery (CIV)

The event horizon – the point at which a black hole absorbs light, as black as black may be. Cavalier Event Horizon Black IPA is the very manifestation of suggestion. The image used on the label is the result of 160 telescopes spanning the entire world fixed on a single black hole, assembled to capture the moment, the Event Horizon absorbs light.
