In 2021, two of the biggest superstars in music – Ed sheeran and Adele – released their highly anticipated new albums to an adoring audience.
–In February, Ed celebrated his 30th birthday. In June he released a new single, “Bad habits, and in August, he announced that his new album would be called = [Equals] and that it would be released on October 29.
–In September, Ed celebrated the 10th anniversary of the release of his debut album, + (More), with a special concert at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London, and announced a massive 2022 European stadium tour that will begin in April.
–On October 24, after a massive global promotional blitz, Ed and his daughter Lyre both fell with COVID-19, just days before the release of = [Equals]. However, he did manage to break out of his forties to perform on Saturday Night Live November 6.
– = [Equals], Ed’s first new solo album since setting the 2017 world record ?? [Divide], debuted at number one in the United States and has so far produced three hits: “Bad Habits”, “Shivers” and “Graffiti Gateway.“
-While = [Equals] sold a respectable 118,000 equivalent album units in its first week in the US, UK it had the biggest opening week of 2021, and the biggest overall since ?? [Divide] in 2017. These two records were broken the following week by ABBAthe comeback album of, Trip.
– “Bad Habits” peaked at number two in the US but topped the charts for 11 weeks in the UK In November, it received a Grammy nomination for song of the year.
–And in December, Ed and his friend Elton john teamed up for an instantly successful vacation single, “Merry Christmas. ”
But any dreams Ed had to truly dominate the charts in 2021 were crushed by Adele.
–In October, after years of speculation, Adele announced a new single, “Easy on me. This was followed by the news that her first album in six years, titled 30, would arrive on November 19.
– “Easy On Me” arrived on October 15th. In five hours he entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 68, then rose to number one a few days later, becoming Adele’s first number one since “Hello” in 2015.
–After a promotional campaign that included a sit with Oprah winfrey on CBS, 30 entered the charts at number one, earning 839,000 equivalent album units in her first week, giving Adele the biggest debut week of all albums in 2021.
–By December 6 30 had won a million sales of traditional albums – that is, CDs, vinyls, cassettes and digital album downloads – making it the first album in over a year to do so .
–On November 30, Adele announced a residency in Las Vegas, Weekends with Adèle, which will see her perform two shows at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas each weekend from January 21, 2022 through Saturday April 16.
